The Realisation (Once upon a Time and A Sojourn and The Realisation) was a solo action and played with and on three different interweaving levels: from a temporal perspective, a solo action from the past (Once upon a Time, Vienna, June 2006) and one from the future (A Sojourn, Berlin, October 2011) were shifted to the present of their own performance. In terms of format, it crisscrossed the borders of (art) installation, (theatrical) staging and (literary) story-telling. The role of the spectator was also cast beyond the usual two possibilities of participation or observation in a new way: with the figure of the solo walker.

Einstieg und Rückkehr einer Einzelgängerin (LOCALIZE-Festival, Potsdam) | Entry and return of a solo walker (LOCALIZE festival, Potsdam)
The Realisation is a live audio-performance for one participant and has been performed twice to date: in June 2011 at the LOCALIZE Festival in Potsdam and in October 2011 starting at the Ballhaus Ost in Berlin. At the venue for the performance, the participant is brought to a waiting car and the door to the back seat is opened, where a set of earphones is waiting. As soon as the participant gets in and puts on the earphones, the driver starts the car and drives off. A voice begins to speak. The voice introduces itself as a ‘loner’ and explains how it came to be one.
At first it’s unclear where the voice is coming from; it could also be pre-recorded. But little by little it becomes clear that it is speaking live: again and again, what is said clearly has a relationship to the things happening in real time around the participant. The participant’s attention is directed outside the car, but at the same time nothing is happening that is definitely recognisable as a staged scene or deliberately manufactured situation. Neither is ‘public space’ made a concrete issue or theme of the performance: no specific buildings, squares or streets are ascribed an actual or a fictional story. Instead, the voice provides a kind of character to the modes of behaviour of the lone participant during the drive.

Szenen eines Einzelgangs (LOCALIZE-Festival, Potsdam) | Scenes from a solo walk (LOCALIZE festival, Potsdam)
How a loner behaves and what preferences and dislikes he or she has as a loner are a form of warm-up for a repeatedly mentioned ‘solo journey’, which emerges as the very genre that corresponds to the loner. As a participant then, one is on the way to some sort of solo journey, which is to begin any time now. After a while, the car does turn off the main road and stops in the hidden back-courtyard of a cinema. There, in a dimly lit doorway, is a board with “Once Upon a Time, solo action, Vienna, 9.6.2006” written on it – should I get out or not? is the question the participant might ask themselves – but yet the voice continues, returns to the subject of turning up too late and so the participant decides, not only because of the wires attached to the earphones, to stay in the car and see what happens. The solo traveller seems irritated, but also not very surprised about the situation; it seems they’ve missed something yet again, which after all happens to everyone now and again.
At this point, the voice suddenly, but not completely unexpectedly, starts to address the participant directly as ‘you’‚ although at the same time this ‘you’ is embedded in the indirect description of the scene or the re-narration of another solo journey, which may have happened exactly like this or may have happened slightly differently. The temporality of arriving ‘too early’ or ‘too late’ and the problems of being in the right place at the right time are repeatedly addressed; the unpredictable is emphatically invoked as an apparently essential quality of solo journeys.

Szenen eines Einzelgangs (Ballhaus Ost, Berlin) | Scenes from a solo walk (Ballhaus Ost, Berlin)

It must be about more than unlikely timeframes and the most random focus of attention(s) possible, or even better, about attention(s) directed in multiple directions, but at this point, the participant is not yet familiar with these ‘solo journeys’, which are apparently ‘so wellknown’. Again and again, small ‘solo’ scenes are mentioned or even played out a bit – it sounds like a trailer for something that has perhaps either already happened or has not happened yet. And always only perhaps. When the drive continues again, the voice starts to talk about the interior of the car: a bottle of water left on the seat and a (forgotten?) handbag are mentioned by the lone voice and spoken of with excitement, although as time passes, it becomes increasingly unclear whether the description of ‘loner’ and ‘solo traveller’ applies to the speaker, a fictional character or to the participant themselves. This is followed by another stop-off, in front of a disused theatre, where a sign promises “A Sojourn, solo action, 31.10.2011, Ballhaus Ost Berlin”, but this time with the temporal aspect of arriving “too early” and therefore of a pre-preview.

In the last part of the drive, the content of the piece begins to come together and connect in the increasingly distinct lack of clarity about whether the voice is addressing itself or someone else, and becomes explicit as a demand.

As a listener with headphones, i.e. as a participant in The Realisation, one is transformed from a recipient into a producer, a producer of the results of one’s own imagination, including the imagined roles for oneself in the process. It is precisely the productive quality of the roles of listener, participant and recipient that are addressed in this piece and which are therefore the main focus, in the form of the unmediated distance that defines the listener with headphones. The Realisation is both and simultaneously a singling out of the participant in public, their encapsulation and an opening up to that which is happening all around them, but also an interplay about a character – that of the ‘loner’ – who in their positioning, i.e. personification or embodiment, remains indistinct and is dispersed between speaker and participant.

The drive ends where it began, the participating solo traveller gets out, someone else takes your place, a new journey begins ...
