A Soujourn (back and forth and on the spot) was an areal solo action – a format that slips between the borders of (art) exhibition and (theatrical) staging, and which is based on the rhythmical flow between isolation and coming together. Each participant could only enter a part of the areal and could only do so alone. The action was made up of three ‘event spaces’ and one ‘interspace’ and was spread throughout the entire Ballhaus Ost building: the theatre auditorium and the gallery above, the rehearsal stage on the second floor, the performance and exhibition space on the third floor, and the bar – all were part of the exhibition staging. In each event space was an installation that filled the room and could be entered. These installations could be seen as individual works in themselves, but each one also referred to the other rooms (and the previous areal solo action: The Realisation).

All three spaces turned on (and in) different temporalities: beginning and interruption, movement and stillness, anteriority and posteriority, shedding new light on well-known and frequently dealt with experiences of frustration: such as nothing really being communicated and the domination of emptiness; or everything coming to a standstill so that it seems nothing can be moved; or always arriving too late or too early for whatever was happening or will happen. At the same time, all three spaces take these experiences only as their starting point, not to confirm them, but to expose them, in order to perhaps cause a shift in perspective – away from confirmation and towards the fluid temporalities of these experiences.

The areal solo action is always constructed in two stages: first the participants enter the ‘interspace’, which acts as a threshold, and from there, they move on to the ‘event spaces’ of the areal. In this case, the Ballhaus Ost bar functioned as the interspace: this was where the performance began and ended. There, the rules of the game were explained to the participants, who were then led away individually by escorts to one of the three event spaces and later brought back again. During the performance, the bar served as a space to gather, both for those who were waiting and for those who had returned. If participants wanted to find out what the others had experienced in the event spaces, they could do so here by talking to others. Each report conveyed different parts, moments, perspectives. It was a matter of the variety of the events and the stories told about them – not a singular event that could be pinned down.

Raum Vague Aplomb

The solo walker is escorted to a locked door. The escort unlocks the door and brings him into a large room. In the middle of the room is a separate space divided from the rest of the room by dark curtains – a room within the room. The escort brings the solo walker to its entrance, pulls back the curtain and asks him to enter.

Behind the curtains the space is dimly light. A heavy bass tone fills it, but in the distance, the noises from the bar can still be heard: lounge music and the chit-chat of the others. In the centre of the space is an almost three-meter high cuboid, with a square base. Light escapes through the cracks between its edges – a spotlight is shining into it from above. As the solo walker wanders around the cuboid, the light increases gradually in intensity until the cuboid is illuminated in brilliant, white light. When the solo walker stops for a moment, suddenly one of the walls opens …

Raum Ex Nihilo

The solo walker is taken to a locked door by an escort. She opens it, turns on the light and invites the solo walker to sit on a chair in the middle of an otherwise empty room. She makes sure that he has seated himself and then leaves him alone.

But the room is not completely empty – there seem to be remnants from some other event the night before: empty bottles of beer and ashtrays, a ladder, crumpled up pieces of paper on the floor. Suddenly, the door flies open and a
troop of what seem to be stagehands or cleaners charge into the room, armed with buckets, cloths and sweeping brushes. Hectically, they sweep the floor and wipe the windows, grab beer bottles and pick up cigarette butts, before flurrying out the door, and then bustling back in with what seem to be props that had not yet been set up. In top-speed the scene is now set: a table is planted in front of the solo walker, a TV on top of it, a DVD player beneath, a lamp on one side and a houseplant on the other. A glass of wine and some snacks are provided, a DVD is inserted and the remote control pressed into the solo walker's hand. One final check to see if everything is in its place, and then the troop disappears as quickly as it came. One girl runs back breathlessly to switch off the light. The solo walker presses play …

Intimate Play | Text: Sandra Man; Stimme | Voice: Kristof Gerega; Wegbegleiterin | Escort: Lisa Stertz

Raum Intimate Play

The solo walker is escorted to a locked door. His escort gives him a set of wireless headphones, unlocks the door and asks him to enter the room.

The room is in semi-darkness, lit only by the blueish light from a video projector. This seems to be an art exhibition of some kind: apart from the projector, there are numerous other canvases and picture frames in different formats on the walls, a monitor on a pedestal, and in the corner opposite the projector, a spotlight creating a pool of light on the floor. There is also a bench in the middle of the room. The canvases, picture frames, monitor screen and video projection are all white, empty – unused. While the solo walker orientates himself in the room, slowly looking around, moving from object to object, a voice begins to speak to him through the headphones …
