GLITZ was an international and cross-genre art project which ran over a number of years (2006–2009) and was based in Berlin. It was conceived, created and organised by a collaborative team under the artistic direction of Moritz Majce and Sandra Man. An Austrian company became involved as a private sponsor to finance the project. An opening event along with two parallel series of events over four years was planned. The main emphasis was on work created by contemporary artists in the areas of installation, architecture, performance and film. After three years of intense preparation, the sponsor pulled out due to the current financial crisis and effectively ended GLITZ.
A total of twelve events in different European cities (including Paris, Lisbon, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Rome) were planned to take place between 2008 and 2012: the opening event in Berlin, titled ‘Blank’, along with four ‘Facets’ and seven ‘Fragments’. From the end of 2006 to the middle of 2009, the team worked on the concept and the initial organisation of the events and began to talk to various artists. When circumstances put an end to the project, more than twenty internationally renowned artists – including Guillaume Bijl, Janet Cardiff, Martin Creed, Plamen Dejanoff, Bill Drummond, Antony Gormley, Terence Koh, Aernout Mik, Mike Nelson, Carsten Nicolai, Hans Op de Beeck, Tobias Rehberger and Tatiana Trouvé, amongst others – had already agreed to take part in GLITZ.
