Uraufführung von Festung / Europa in den Sophiensælen in Berlin am 6.3.2015 | First performance of Festung / Europa at Sophiensæle in Berlin on 6.3.2015.

Fortress / Europe: Fortress and, or, as Europe. The title allows the relationship between inside and outside to open up, asks how and where we situate ourselves and want to situate ourselves, how and if we want to move towards another space and another Europe. One that can be affirmed, with which we can affirm ourselves, which is curious and open. One we come across by making out a space, in which we have already been, one in and as which we move, turn, circle, together with and around many other bodies. World-space.

What happens when something does not just move in the space, but as space, when a space in its entirety starts moving? If it is not already presumed, not already established, not premade so that an action can be shown within it, but rather becomes the event itself? What happens when, instead of an individualised protagonist, a number of bodies are carrying out actions, without distinguishing one body from the other? If a chorus like this does not speak, but produces a space, defines it, changes it, in other words, is a space chorus? And what happens when the audience moves from its facing position in the dark to the bright centre, and is framed by what is happening, the play around them always different, surrounded?

Fortress / Europe is a sequence of image spaces that each time determines differently the relationship of the participants in the space chorus among themselves, between the participants and the wall elements, and finally between the space chorus and the audience. The wall elements used always have two sides, qualities, functions: they open, delimit, exclude and include, open up and allow, are fixed, held or carried. Sometimes their surface is in the foreground, other times their gravity, their weight. The space chorus moves and moves itself with the wall elements, follows a choreography that shifts from static to dynamic: each performance is initially determined by a series of actions that remain the same, and in the second part, follows a set of rules that is different each time and forms the basis of a real-time choreography.
